Promoting the export of Vietnam bamboo and rattan products

1. Exporting bamboo and rattan products in Vietnam:

Export turnover of bamboo and rattan products increased strongly to 44.4% in 2019, but only reached 474 million USD which is less than half of the target for 2020 set out 10 years ago.

According to the General Department of Forestry, in 2019, Vietnam's export of bamboo and rattan products reached US $ 474 million, an increase of 44.4% compared to 2018, the group of products with the highest value in non-timber forest products.

Rattan, bamboo and seagrass products are mainly exported to EU countries, accounting for 31.44% of the proportion and up 35.36% over the previous year. Next is the US market, accounting for 19.5% and nearly doubling compared to 2018; Japanese market accounted for 9.3% and up 10.8%. Rattan, bamboo and seagrass products of Vietnam are also exported to other markets such as Germany, China, Poland, Denmark…

2. Lots of possibilities but lack of raw materials

In the past year, the export turnover of Vietnam rattan, bamboo and seagrass products has grown in many markets, especially in India by 2.3 times even though the turnover to this market is still very small.

Craft villages

Currently, Vietnam has 723 craft villages of processing rattan and bamboo and more than 1,000 enterprises involved in the production and export of these handicraft products attracting 342,000 workers. Although there are a large number of enterprises and household manufacturing and exporting, turnover has increased sharply, the export market share of Vietnam's bamboo and rattan products accounts for less than 3% of the world market. While the global market of bamboo and rattan products is up to 14-15 billion USD, Vietnam's bamboo and rattan industry is still lumbering in the export value of several hundred million USD but cannot enter the 1 billion USD like other agricultural, forestry and aquatic products.

Mr. Thai Dai Phong, Director of Duc Phong Co., Ltd (Vinh City, Nghe An) said that although his company is producing and exporting stably all kinds of lamps, table lamps, boxes, fruit baskets... in European countries, America, Asia, but the challenge is not small for businesses when the source of raw materials is unstable in quantity and quality, and the price is getting higher and higher.

Although there are many potentials and advantages to grow and develop bamboo and rattan, Vietnam still has to import this group of raw materials for production and processing from some countries in the region. According to the General Department of Forestry, Vietnam annually consumes about 900 million bamboo trees for different purposes, expected to be 1 billion trees by 2020. Vietnam currently has approximately 1.5 million hectares of bamboo with an estimated reserve of 6 billion trees. However, most of this bamboo area is protective forest, primary forest needs to be preserved and not exploited. The total area of planted bamboo nationwide is about 85,000 ha with a reserve of 350 million trees, only meeting 1/3 of the demand for raw materials for the production of bamboo and rattan products.

3. Promote planting bamboo rattan tree

Prof. Dr. Vo Dai Hai, Director of the Vietnam Forest Science Institute, said that bamboo is the group of NTFPs with the largest area today. Scientists have investigated and classified over 200 species of bamboo, bamboo, and bamboo in Vietnam. In which, more than 10 species of bamboo have production potential for commercial use, such as phoenix, apricot, bamboo, rattan…

bamboo

However, some types of bamboo are mainly exploited but have not been propagated, starting to have root extraction trials for planting so they do not meet technical requirements and are not consistent in quality. The exploitation has not been planned, overexploited, leading to the degradation of bamboo.

In addition, the connection between elements in the bamboo value chain is loose, ineffective, and does not guarantee fairness and transparency. It has negatively affected the quality, traceability of products and reduced the competitiveness of Vietnamese handicrafts and bamboo-based household items in the world.

The potentials and advantages of the bamboo chain are considered underdeveloped due to their limited scale, spontaneous, small, fragmented collection and trading system, mainly for construction, knitting prices. In particular, Vietnam does not have strict technical standards for bamboo quality, forest certification, silvicultural solutions for bamboo are still limited, lack of sustainable forest management options, raw material areas are still scattered.

Recognizing the potentials and strengths of rattan, bamboo, some locals are developing bamboo rattan products. Currently, the project "Sustainable development of the value chain of bamboo in Vietnam" worth 4.3 million Euro co-financed by the EU and Oxfarm is being implemented in 4 years (2018 - 2022) in 5 provinces of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh and Tien Giang. The project benefits 150 bamboo production groups with 35,000 members and 60 small and medium bamboo and rattan processing enterprises.

Thanh Hoa has the largest volume of bamboo in the country, with 152,659 ha bamboo, mainly distributed in 11 western districts in which ten of thousands ha of bamboo and are planted forests. Every year, Thanh Hoa supplies to the market about 0.8 million tons of bamboo and bamboo. However, according to experts, the productivity of growing bamboo in Thanh Hoa is still low, if managed, protected, cared for intensively, and exploited in accordance with the technical process, it can annually provide the market about 1.6 million tons.

To promote these potentials and strengths, Thanh Hoa province has many policies to encourage and attract businesses to invest in the bamboo processing industry. Thereby, the province has 126 establishments processing products from bamboo including 9 cooperatives, 17 domestic companies, 1 foreign company and 99 individual business households. By the end of 2019, Thanh Hoa Bamboo Association was established with Decision No. 2869 / QD-UBND to promote the image and potential of Thanh Hoa bamboo and to promote investment attraction and development of the local bamboo processing industry.
