1.1 Characteristics of water hyacinth
Water hyacinth is a popular plant in rural Vietnam. It easily grows on water and floats where the water runs and has flowers through four seasons. Even in flood season, when floods rise with the reddish color of alluvium, the plant stays green and violet flowers sprout. The end of winter and early spring is the main flowering season of water hyacinth.
The water hyacinth is generally found floating upon the surfaces of lakes or growing in muddy areas close to water. It is particularly suited to tropical and sub-tropical climates and can be found in many areas across the globe, including the southern USA, South America, East, West and Southern Africa, Southeast Asia and Australia. The water hyacinth even appears in Europe, although usually only in gardens where it has been specifically reared, as the conditions in Europe are not favorable to its growth.
A key characteristic of the water hyacinth is its growth. The plant grows at an astonishingly rapid rate; because it is asexual, it is able to reproduce without relying upon insect or wind pollination for fertilization. Provided it has the correct conditions for growth, including a warm temperature and a high moisture level, the water hyacinth can reproduce almost constantly, covering huge areas, such as the surface of a lake.
1.2 The usages of water hyacinth
Water hyacinth can be used for many purposes as below:
Paper:
The water hyacinth paper alone does not make a particularly good paper but when the fiber is blended with waste paper or jute, the result is good.
Fibre Board:
Used for general purposes and as low-cost roofing materials.
Yarn and Rope:
The fiber from the stems of the water hyacinth plant can be used to make rope.
Basket work:
In Vietnam and the Philippine, water hyacinth is dried and used to make water hyacinth baskets and matting for domestic use.
Charcoal Briquetting:
Proposed in Kenya for developing briquetting of charcoal dust from the pyrolysis of water hyacinth.
Water Purification:
Water hyacinth can be used to aid the process of water purification either for drinking water or liquid effluents for sewage systems.
Animal Fodder:
Studies have shown that in Southeast Asia, some animals are federations containing water hyacinth. The nutritional problems with animals like pigs can be solved by hyacinth feeding, but of course, human beings cannot eat.
Fertilizer:
Water hyacinth can be used on the land either as green manure or compost.
Fish feed:
Fishes can be helpful in controlling aquatic weeds like hyacinth. The nutrient content promotes subsequent increase in fish yield.
Phytoremediation of heavy metals and crude oil-polluted sites:
Water hyacinth has the ability to absorb heavy metals and rid the aquatic environment of these pollutants.

3. How to clean water hyacinth cushions
To keep your water hyacinth cushions clean and sustainable, you can follow different ways:
- Use the vacuum cleaner to remove dust.
- Wash with mild soap and water, then dry.
- Brush with nylon brush to remove dry food or mud etc.
- A paint thinner can be used to remove tougher stains.
- For major liquid spills, remove all upholstery, hose the water hyacinth furniture and place outside or in a drying room to dry. Please note that it is important that the furniture is dried and not remain wet or damp for any length of time as this will result in mould and subsequent deterioration of the water hyacinth furniture.
- Water hyacinth is a natural untreated handmade product and will absorb moisture and dry out in direct relation to climate conditions. To avoid any deterioration it is recommended that the environment be dry and well ventilated.
- Brown and Black colored water hyacinth is a stained natural product and colors may vary.
