What are the similarities and distinctions between bamboo and rattan furniture?

According to my customer, they feedback that: “ I was looking for patio furniture and came across a cool outdoor package that would be perfect in my backyard. I mistook it for bamboo at first glance. The sticker read "Rattan" when examined more closely. I used to think that bamboo, rattan were all interchangeable words. I looked it up when I got home and discovered that I was mistaken.”

Bamboo and rattan are not the same thing, despite their similarities. Here are a few examples of the differences:

  • Bamboo is from the grass family... Rattan is a type of palm tree from South East Asia.

  • Some species of bamboo will grow to be HUGE such as bamboo timber... Rattan although extremely strong doesn’t get very big.

  • Bamboo is hollow... Rattan has a solid core

Bamboo

Bamboo is a giant grass with a hollow core. Some of the tallest timber bamboo species have been recorded to reach a height of 98 feet (30 meters) and a diameter of 9-12 inches (25-30cm). The wood is said to be tougher than mahogany, despite the fact that it is listed as a grass. Bamboo can be woven by human hand, making many other type of product, such as: Chair, Lampshade, Mirror, Basket,.....

Rattan

Rattan is a South East Asian descendant of the palm tree. Rattan vines are long-lasting, versatile, and have a strong heart. Rattan grows like a tree, but as it reaches the ground, it bends back down and travels underground like a vine. It's one of the world's toughest woods, and it's been used to build footbridges in a variety of countries. It's ideal for smaller projects like wicker furniture.

Lampshade made from 100% Rattan
Straight poles are bent to a desired form with steam and then hanged to dry while making rattan furniture. They'll keep their form until they're dry. The fabrics used in the weaving of wicker furniture are often formed poles and spindly vines.

It has a high rate of growth and is a resource that is readily sustainable.

In conclusion, bamboo is a grass that is hollow. The colossal tree can reach a height of 98 feet. It is more difficult to work with than mahogany. Rattan is a plant with a sturdy core. It is one of the world's toughest forests. It can be woven and bent. It never grows as dense or as tall as bamboo.

Finally, rattan and bamboo furniture are both green and environmentally sustainable. Your carbon footprint is reduced by purchasing or building your own bamboo or rattan wicker furniture.

That's it - bamboo and rattan - the mystery is solved.
